Dr Gwenda Anga, Papa New Guinea

Dr Gwenda Anga is a Paediatric Oncologist from Papua New Guinea.

She completed her university and medical training in Port Moresby and is one of ten women (out of 200 in her class) to undertake a medical degree (offered to only 40 students). Gwenda is the first paediatrician to specialise in paediatric oncology, providing leadership, guidance and advice to medical staff across Papua New Guinea.

Along with developing education initiatives, Gwenda also sees the potential for improvements in diagnostics and chemotherapy, as well as palliative care strategies.

Papua New Guinea does not have a dedicated paediatric hospital. Paediatric oncology care is provided by paediatricians who are interested in oncology but have limited training. The first and only paediatric oncology ward in Papua New Guinea was opened at Port Moresby Hospital in 2015. It serves 40-60 patients annually with three paediatricians and three oncology nurses providing limited treatment options to patients.
