Teen Cancer America

Teen Cancer America partners with cancer centers and hospitals across the United States interested in developing programs targeted at improving the care and outcomes of adolescents and young adults (AYA) diagnosed with cancer. This population faces unique challenges with cancer, its treatment, and survivorship due to their age and transitional stages in life. Cancer disrupts these critical years, derailing the defining journey into adulthood. We bring our experience and expertise in building comprehensive AYA programs, collaborating with each site to create a tailored approach that meets the unique needs of the site’s AYAs and clinicians, leveraging existing services and resources within the treatment center, while integrating community resources.

Youth Cancer Service

The Youth Cancer Service (YCS) provides treatment and support for young people with cancer aged 15 to 25 and is based in based in major hospitals throughout Australia. More than 1,000 Australians aged 15 to 25 are diagnosed with cancer every year and approximately 75% of newly diagnosed young cancer patients are now being treated and supported through the YCS. Adolescents and young adults with cancer (‘AYAs’) have unique and complex medical and psychosocial needs, distinct from those of paediatric and older adult patients. Specialised AYA care is an essential component of optimal cancer care pathways for young people. Tailored care gives young people the very best chance of survival and helps manage the immediate and long-term impacts of AYA cancer on individuals, families, communities, health systems and economies. Dedicated, multi-disciplinary YCS teams deliver specialist, coordinated medical and psychosocial care and support to AYAs across Australia. They use a flexible, multidisciplinary team-based approach that considers and provides for the needs of young people and families across the disease trajectory from diagnosis, through treatment to survivorship and palliative care. In the 14 years since the first specialised YCS opened its doors we have seen survival rates increase to 90%.

The AYA Cancer Global Accord

In 2015, Canteen Australia, UK’s Teenage Cancer Trust, and Teen Cancer America, formed the AYA Cancer Global Accord. Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer have unique and complex medical and psychosocial needs, distinct from those of paediatric and older adult patients, and as such, require tailored, specialised AYA cancer care. The aim of the Accord is to invest and support a growing multidisciplinary workforce who are committed to improving the lives of AYAs diagnosed with cancer, worldwide. A key focus of this partnership is the Annual Global AYA Cancer Congress Series, hosted on a rotating basis by the foundational partner organisations. Together these organisations have created the first truly global congress in AYA cancer care, where speakers from across the globe gather to present sector-leading research on cancer care for young people, helping to improve treatment and care around the world. The Congress provides health and social care professionals a unique opportunity to network and share information about this specialist area of cancer care, and to learn from leading national and international specialists in their respective disciplines.
