Technical Tour

The Post Conference Technical Tour will take place on Thursday, 8 June, 2022 and will visit the sites shown below.

Registration fees include transport, morning tea and lunch.

Site 1 - Paul's Wetland

Lake Wendouree has an esteemed history as host to many nationally significant events such as the Masters Games, Ironman, and the 1956 Olympic Rowing – to name a few. During the Millennium Drought, the City of Ballarat, with Central Highlands Water (CHW) and state investment, installed a diverse mix of alternative water supplies to Lake Wendouree and initially to 11 irrigated precincts, which has grown since. Paul’s Wetland is one of the key stormwater harvesting sites into this large integrated network.

At inception it was ambitious and innovative, and the network has naturally experienced many outstanding successes and challenges over the past 15 years. The City of Ballarat and CHW, with further state investment, are working to increase water supplies, expand irrigation to new sites, and address barriers to maximise use of alternative water at the original sites connected during the Millennium Drought.

Site 2 - Insignia

The Insignia development was completed in 2017. Redevelopment of Ballarat Golf Club included a new championship golf course and residential development across 45 hectares, with 500 housing lots. The vision for Insignia was to create a high quality contemporary residential development that integrated architecture with the environment.

The vision capitalised on the unique setting between the new landscaped golf course, tree-lined Avenue of Honour, and Prince of Wales Park which is one of Ballarat’s largest green spaces. Delivery against the vision placed focus on various forms of WSUD, with a range of public perception and operation and maintenance challenges that emerged.

Site 3 - Yarrowee GPT

Since the mid-1800’s Ballarat has evolved around the Yarrowee River with a history of deep lead and alluvial gold mining. Today, the Yarrowee River and its tributaries pass through the CBD by a complex network of bluestone lined drains, pipes, open channels, and channels capped with concrete and developed over.

The Yarrowee River is a known hotspot for stormwater litter that has led to public concern and media coverage. Previous attempts at small-scale decentralised solutions have failed for several reasons despite efforts to adjust over several years. The City of Ballarat is exploring the ambitious concept of a centralised solution downstream of the CBD and benchmarking this against multiple engineered solutions within the main drains of the complex inner-city heritage environment.

Site 4 - Winter Valley Rise & Conroy's Green

Ballarat is one of Victoria’s major urban growth centres, primarily within the Ballarat West Urban Growth Area (BWUGA) which commenced development in 2014. By 2036 the BWUGA will have provided around 14,500 new homes and 40,000 new residents across 1,720 hectares. This is about a 40% increase in population and 25% increase of the city’s urban footprint in about 20 years.

Winter Valley Rise and Conroy’s Green are two of the major residential developments in-progress along the Winter’s Creek in the BWUGA. When complete they will cover 65.5 hectares and 775 residential allotments combined. They lie where the volcanic planar topography gives way to shallow gullies and the Drainage Strategy transitions to a focus on basin/wetlands integrated with the linear POS. These interface areas are subject to the ongoing challenges and opportunities of Drainage Strategy implementation and revisions through the life cycle of a large-scale multi-decade PSP.
