Post Conference Workshops

In addition to the two conference days, ASCP conducted workshop sessions on Wednesday 24 July 2019.

The morning workshop session contained two topics:

  • Concrete road pavement value including competitiveness, whole of life benefits, asset owner investment decisions, and related issues.
  • Asset owner viable options for major concrete road pavement upgrades and rehabilitation including widening, extending and reusing.

The afternoon workshop session was on Roller Compacted Concrete, and was partnered by Aran Australia.  It included a presentation on RCC pavement design, mix design, aggregates, construction methods, sub-base preparation, jointing, surface finishing, trouble shooting, pitfalls to be avoided, and project cost and schedule benefits.

The objective in holding workshops was to determine how ASCP can best position concrete pavements as economically viable and competitive, durable in the long term, of high quality, and sustainable.  The outcomes from the workshops were to develop a forward plan necessary to achieve the objectives for each workshop topic.

The workshops were not conducted to delve into detail on technical matters (design, materials and construction) which were better addressed through conference papers and ASCP forums.

Workshop Objectives and Outcomes

MORNING WORKSHOP
Major concrete road pavement value

Workshop objective: To determine how ASCP can position major concrete road pavements as the preferred pavement investment choice.

Issues: Initial cost; pavement maintenance records; whole of life analysis; rehabilitation options to extend life; skid resistance; road/tyre noise.

Data available: Initial costs for different concrete pavement types. Rehabilitation options. Only USA data for concrete overlays. Skid resistance and durability. Road/tyre noise and durability.  HEX, Valla, other.

Data required: Maintenance records.  Maybe descriptive records of performance on pavements constructed in last 20 years.  Similar/comparative data for asphalt pavements.

Data presentation: Workshop discussion – how to collect, assemble and present.

Advocacy: Workshop discussion regarding organisations for engagement.

Forward plan: Workshop summary and windup topic.

Pavement upgrades and rehabilitation

Workshop objective: To determine how ASCP can promote with asset owners viable options for major concrete road pavement upgrades and rehabilitation including widening, extending and reusing.

Issues: Cost; traffic management; user delays; repairs, strategic interventions, allow to deteriorate then full replacement; capital vs maintenance funds; sustainability.

Data/options available: Concrete overlays; widening experience; maintenance methods; rapid repairs (benefits on user delays).

Data required: Concrete overlay costs (no Australian experience); is documentation available on repairs?; what influences funding decisions? Sustainability data.

Data presentation: Workshop discussion – how to collect, assemble and present.

Advocacy: Workshop discussion regarding organisations for engagement.

Forward plan: Workshop summary and windup topic.

AFTERNOON WORKSHOP
Roller Compacted Concrete

Workshop objectives: To present current USA developments and applications for RCC.  To determine applications for RCC in Australia including for heavy-duty industrial and port pavements, major road pavements, and Local Government applications.

Issues: Quality; surface finishes; ride quality; road/tyre noise.

Workshop discussion: Opportunities to extend RCC for road pavements in Australia.

Advocacy: Workshop discussion regarding organisations for engagement – designers; contractors; asset owners including SRAs and Local Government.

Forward plan: Workshop summary and windup topic.
