Information for Delegates

This page contains information which will assist you before and after you arrive at the Convention.

The International Confederation of Principals looks forward to welcoming you to Shanghai, China for the 2019 Convention being held next week.  Please find below some helpful information for you in advance of your arrival in Shanghai.

Cultural Respect

It is important that we understand and respect any cultural differences between our country and our host nation.  ICP values and respects cultural diversity and recognises that the policies and politics of any country is external to our business. China is a communist country and they have very definite policies e.g. Information Technology (please refer to Internet access page of this website) and their relationships with Taiwan, Hong Kong etc. We ask that you respect our host’s policies and refrain from engaging in discussions on policy issues. The Convention will be covered by Chinese media and broadcast across the nation.

Airport Transfers ( http://www.shanghai-airport.com)

As a general recommendation, please bring the name of your destination written down on paper in Chinese plus the phone number, since many taxi drivers don’t speak English. This will help to avoid any misunderstandings.  Please note:  Taxi fares must be paid in local currency.

The taxi rank/stand at both Pudong and Hongqiao Airports is in front of the Arrivals Hall.  The cost of a taxi ride from Pudong to Putuo is around RMB240 although it may be RMB300 after 23:00, and from Hongqiao to Putuo is around RMB60 and after 23:00 RMB75.

Alternative transfers include:

For delegates staying at another venues, please have all the relevant information including the accommodation address for completion of your arrival card and to provide at passport control.

You may need this information for your taxi to the venue. Where possible, have the address written in Chinese as not all drivers will speak English.  Tools such as Google Translate may assist you with translating the address of your hotel.

Other Accommodation

Subject to where you are staying the ECNU, our hosts, will provide guides to the venue from some of the hotels within the vicinity of ECNU.  Please note that there will be a shuttle bus from some of the hotels in the vicinity of ECNU.

For those staying further away from the University, we would encourage you to use the Metro.  The Metro is cheap, easy to navigate, accessible to the ECNU and Putuo district and very efficient.

Please note:  Payment of accommodation must be in local currency or by VISA card.

Dress Code

The dress code for the Council Meeting and Convention is business attire e.g. what you would normally wear to work.

The dress code for Council Dinner is smart casual, however you might like to ‘dress up’.  Some delegates may wish to wear national dress.

The cultural tour requires some bus travel and walking so bring comfortable travel clothes including walking shoes/runner/sport shoes.

Weather

Autumn weather in Shanghai can be variable. Come prepared with layers including a raincoat and umbrella.

Food and Drink

Authentic Chinese food is often quite different to the westernised Chinese food served outside of China. Please ensure you have provided information on food allergies when completing registration. It is always handy to include some light snacks, tea bags and coffee bags in your luggage although there are western options available in the larger centres.  We encourage you to try the local cuisine as it’s all part of the experience of visiting China.

Travel First Aid Kit

Medication varies from country to country, for example, paracetamol is not available in China or medication may have different names or slightly different formulas.  Please ensure that you bring adequate medicine with you in the event that it may be required.  We hope we do not need medication but at past ICP Councils and Conventions there have been delegates with medical issues so it’s better to be prepared.

Getting Around

Shanghai is a very busy and exciting city with a lot of traffic – travel time is always subject to traffic. There is an abundance of cabs however some only service the local area.  The Metro is cheap, easy to navigate, accessible to the ECNU and Putuo district; and very efficient.

Currency

Cash is still the most common method of payment in China. Visa is accepted at many hotels and many large businesses in Shanghai.
