We know that students often are at very different points in their learning and so have quite different learning needs. An objective of schooling should be to ensure that every student is engaged and making good ongoing progress. But how can we be sure this is happening when the structures and processes of schools can result in some students’ learning needs not being adequately identified and met, resulting in lower levels of engagement, growth and attainment.
Research Conference 2021 will provide insights into reforms to curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and professional learning that better support teachers’ efforts to meet individual learning needs and so ensure every student makes excellent progress. This research is indicating the importance of:
Prioritising essential knowledge, skills and understandings in an area of learning and structuring the curriculum based on evidence of how these typically develop over time
Developing teachers’ understandings of the nature of progress (or growth) in a learning area, including the concepts or principles that students find difficult, the misunderstandings they commonly develop, and the ways in which instructional choices influence learning progress
Assessment processes that provide information about individuals’ current levels of attainment and long-term progress – information that teachers, parents, school leaders and students themselves can use to inform decision making.
The Research Conference 2021 is registered with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA).
NSW attendees can claim 12 hours of professional development at the proficient level.

This half-day masterclass will be divided into two parts. In part 1, participants will review the theoretical background, development and intended uses of ACER’s LPs, and get acquainted with them using the online Learning Progression Explorer.
In part 2, participants will split into their preferred groups with a focus on either reading or mathematics. Each group will undertake guided activities that involve either working individually or in smaller groups.
