Prof Susan Sawyer

Professor Susan Sawyer AM MBBS MD FRACP holds the Geoff and Helen Handbury Chair of Adolescent Health at the University of Melbourne and is Director of the Centre for Adolescent Health at the Royal Children’s Hospital and Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Australia’s leading academic centre of excellence in adolescent health. She is widely published (H-index 90), including a series of influential papers in the Lancet such as the 2016 Lancet Commission on Adolescent Health and Wellbeing. Susan chairs the Victorian Government’s advisory committee on AYA cancer. She leads a postgraduate program in adolescent health through the University of Melbourne which a decade ago developed a separate stream on AYA cancer. She led the development of a free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Global Adolescent Health to enhance global access to basic education on adolescent health  that has attracted over 10,000 students since 2015. Susan led a body of work for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians that led to the establishment of accredited specialist training for Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine in Australia. Susan is a past board member of the US Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine and was president of the International Association for Adolescent Health (2022-24). She co-leads the Adolescent Medicine Specialist Advisory Group for the International Paediatric Association.
