Event Breakdown
This seminar presents a practical pathway for applying the River Styles Framework to urban and highly modified streams by demonstrating how geomorphic principles can remain central to river management even where channels have been engineered, constrained or entirely reconstructed. Drawing on examples from a range of urban settings, the presentation will show that the Framework provides a robust and flexible means of characterising river form and function, assessing condition, evaluating recovery potential, and identifying realistic management priorities in urban riverscapes.
Urban streams are increasingly the focus of water sensitive urban design and nature-based solutions that seek to improve liveability, biodiversity, flood resilience and water quality. However, many interventions are implemented without a coherent understanding of the physical template that underpins river behaviour. This seminar demonstrates how the River Styles Framework can provide that template, enabling practitioners to distinguish between natural and anthropogenic geomorphic features, interpret altered processes, and develop evidence-based rehabilitation and management strategies.
The presentation highlights how the River Styles Framework can be applied without modifying its core procedures, while explicitly recognising urban controls and constraints. The River Styles Framework offers a powerful tool for integrating geomorphology into urban planning, stream rehabilitation and blue-green infrastructure design.
